Hi, I'm Sophia!
I'm a graduate student at CSU, Chico, and I'll be researching under Dr. Kristopher Blee. My research investigates the subcellular localization of the histone H3 protein in Arabidopsis thaliana. Using fluorescent microscopy, I can determine whether or not this protein can bind to organelles outside of its intended location in the nucleus. This will provide more insight on the function, purpose, and structure of histone H3 within the cell.
I'm a Hmong-American student born and raised in Oroville, CA. During my undergrad, I majored in cellular and molecular biology and loved every minute of it. I'm based in Chico, CA and am the proud owner of two kittens. I enjoy watching horror movies, eating sushi, and traveling to new places. My hobbies include painting, crafting, and baking.
Dr. Blee is fascinated with the intricacies of plant-microbe interactions from the anatomical level to the molecular. His research interests are aimed at measuring plant responses in defense and carbon metabolism to the colonization efforts of arbuscularmycorrhizal fungi in plant tissue. Our lab has cloned the oxidative burst peroxidase from bean, expressed it in yeast, and generated antisense gene silenced tobacco to better examine peroxidases in plant defense. Additionally we are evaluating naturally occurring plant defense signaling compounds for their effectiveness as agents in the induction of plant systemic resistance.
